This does none of that. A ring of violet UV LEDs draws insects toward the opening, a quiet fan pulls them down the funnel, and they end up in a tray at the base you twist off and rinse. No chemicals, no smoke, no crackle.

How it actually works

• The light does the luring. Mosquitoes and small flying insects orient toward particular wavelengths in the dark. The LED ring sits inside the mouth of the funnel, so the light they follow leads them straight into the intake.
• The fan does the catching. A low-speed fan draws a steady column of air down through the funnel. Anything that gets close enough goes with it.
• The tray does the rest. The base twists off. Tip it out, rinse it, click it back on.

Quiet enough to sleep beside

The fan runs at a low, constant hush — closer to a laptop than a bathroom extractor. There's no high-voltage grid, so nothing ever snaps or pops in the dark. It's the reason this style of trap works in a bedroom when a zapper doesn't.

Runs off any USB port

There's no battery to charge and no special adapter. Plug it into a phone charger, a laptop, a power bank or the USB socket in a caravan. It draws very little, so it can run all night, every night, through the whole season.

Two sizes

Same design, same mechanism, same USB power. The Large simply moves more air and holds more before it needs emptying. If you're buying one for a bedroom, the Compact is the one.

One room is never where it stops

What happens is you put the first one in the bedroom, it earns its keep, and within a week you want another one where you actually sit of an evening. A trap only works on the room it's in — carrying it around defeats the point of something you set and forget.

Getting the most out of it

This is where most people go wrong with light traps, so it's worth two minutes.

• Run it in the dark. It competes with every other light in the room. With the lights off, it's the brightest thing there — which is the whole idea.
• Run it in an empty room first. Switch it on in the bedroom an hour before you turn in, with the door shut. It clears the room while nothing more interesting is in it.
• Low and out of the airflow. Near the floor, away from a fan or an open window, works better than up on a shelf.
• Give it a few nights. It thins a room out over time rather than clearing it in an hour.

An honest word about what it can and can't do

A light trap is not a force field. If you are in the room, awake and uncovered, you are the more attractive target — warm, breathing out carbon dioxide, and no lamp competes with that. What this does well is thin out a closed room before you get into it, and keep working through the night once you're asleep under a sheet. Used that way it earns its place. Sold as an instant fix for a screenless room in peak season, it would disappoint you — so we'd rather say it up front.
